Say what you will about the value of marital love and belonging, the majority of divorces are initiated by women. Moreover, the institution of alimony is a hefty price upon men for making poor marital decisions.
Not to be too cynical however, the partnerships in some marriages work fantastically, of course. Yet, without careful planning (and sometimes with it) the costs can run high and for many years. The advent of alimony further presses the similarities of marriage and prostitution closer as illustrated in a quote from the 2005 movie, Four Brothers:
"You don't pay a [woman to have sex with] you. You pay her to leave."
